Substance Abuse Recovery: Continuing Care and Relapse Prevention

Addiction has an incredibly high rate of relapse.  We do not view these relapses as failures.  Rather, we work with our patients after they achieve remission from addiction to maintain their sobriety and work through obstacles as they arise to prevent serious chronic relapses into addiction.

Clinical science and years of data show that this is a high risk time of relapse for most clients.  At this time, most clients are given a “graduation”, some pamphlets, and sent on their way with a pat on the back.  Most relapse!

Why does this happen over and over again?  The reason is that we know, from previous studies, that this is a very stressful time for the disease of addiction.  If we are going to consider addiction a chronic disease like asthma, consider this: the patient has a mild asthma attack and use their rescue inhaler and feel better.
